[Florida] “Smart” Meter Hazards & Problems

NOTE: Hard-wired or fibre optic meters could provide the same benefit without the 900 MHZ radiation. FPL and other utilities, predictably, are dismissing any hazard from the radiation.

Regarding the radiation from these meters:

Visit http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/
(PubMed) and type in ‘900 MHZ’
… or just go to
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=900%20mhz

You will find countless recent peer reviewed published studies confirming biological effects of non-ionizing radiation of this type.

(Same RF as FPL admits to here:
http://www.fpl.com/ami/qa.shtml#2 )

FPL is now installing these so-called “smart” meters in our area. They are publicly saying that people may “delay” the installation, but FPL is clear that they are mandatory, i.e., they will be installed eventually on each and every home.

There is growing national and international opposition to these meters:

“CL&P’s proposal would force the company’s ratepayers to spend at least $500 million on new meters that are likely to provide few benefits in return,” Jepsen said. He urged the regulators to “continue to evaluate emerging meter system technologies as well as other conservation programs” and only approve installation of the advanced meters when they are cost effective.

The scope of inherent problems with the “smart” meter scheme is generating a politically-diverse opposition, from environmental, privacy, and health advocates, to “Tea Party.”

CNN [VIDEO]: Smart grid vulnerability
http://www.cnn.com/video/standard.html#/video/tech/2009/03/21/meserve.smart.grid.cnn
[Summary: With a little skill and a few hundred dollars of equipment, hackers can use smart meters to increase electric bills or shut off power to one, one-thousand, or one million people. Massive blackouts are possible, tests have shown. A hacker could cause demand to go up and down in a massive way to destabilize the grid in one area, and that could cause other areas to also black out.]

Moreover, the smart grid’s reliance on IT systems and networks exposes the electric grid to potential and known cybersecurity vulnerabilities, which could be exploited by attackers…
A lack of security features built into smart grid devices. According to a panel of experts convened by GAO, smart meters had not been designed with a strong security architecture and lacked important security features. Without securely designed systems, utilities would be at risk of attacks occurring undetected.

Scientific panel on electromagnetic field health risks: consensus points, recommendations, and rationales.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21268443
Abstract
In November, 2009, a scientific panel met in Seletun, Norway, for three days of intensive discussion on existing scientific evidence and public health implications of the unprecedented global exposures to artificial electromagnetic fields (EMF). EMF exposures (static to 300 GHz) result from the use of electric power and from wireless

telecommunications technologies for voice and data transmission, energy, security, military and radar use in weather and transportation. The Scientific Panel recognizes that the body of evidence on EMF requires a new approach to protection of public health; the growth and development of the fetus, and of children; and argues for strong preventative actions. New, biologically-based public exposure standards are urgently needed to protect public health worldwide.

5. PRIVACY (OR LACK THEREOF)

*All new appliances will soon be Smart Meter compliant, further amplifying radiation in the kitchen. Your dishwasher will “REPORT” to your meter! New appliances will identify buyer use by a chip. At a later time, will anything else with a chip be identified in our homes?

What protections are in place for the long-term privacy of law-abiding citizens?  Will information be stored or sold?  Companies such as Grid Glo of Delray Beach, FL, are lining up to mine and monetize private information, using   your smart meter to collect your data to sell to industry and/or government?
